Bonfire Night is a time to enjoy bright lights and shapes, and Early Years teacher, Mia Edmunds, has created an easy Cardboard Tube Sparkler activity to add sparkle to your classroom.
Try out this activity to encourage creativity and independence, as well as inspire new ideas in young learners.
What will you need?
– Cardboard tubes
– Coloured tissue paper
– Ribbon (I used a glittery one!)
– Coloured card – the sparklier the better!
– Star sequins
– Lollypop sticks
– PVA glue
How to make Cardboard Tube Sparklers
I started off my tearing off pieces of tissue paper. I used the PVA glue to stick this onto the tube. I added some PVA over the top to create a shiny texture.
Once I had covered the tube, I added some star sequins whilst the glue was still wet.
Next, I used some of the glitter card to create a cone shape. I stuck this to the top of my Sparkler.
Finally, I added some glitter ribbon and tissue paper to create the ‘fire’. You can also attach a lollypop stick to hold and ‘whooooosh’ your new sparkler!

Benefits of this activity
Crafting these cardboard tube sparklers will give the children an opportunity to explore a variety of creative media and give them the independence to choose their materials and design. Children can also develop communication skills by talking through their choices and forming their own opinions on style.
The activity will also develop fine motor skills and dexterity, as well as support colour, pattern and shape recognition.
