What is Stapelstein?

Stapelstein is a versatile and innovative play concept designed to encourage movement, creativity, and balance in children. Originating from Germany, these lightweight, durable, and stackable stepping stones are made from eco-friendly, recyclable materials. They come in vibrant colors and multiple sizes (mini, original and original grow). The aim of Stapelstein is to ensure that movement is accessible to all, regardless of age or ability.

Why use Stapelstein in your Early Years setting?

Stapelstein is an excellent resource for early years settings, promoting active, open-ended play that enhances physical and cognitive development. Its lightweight, stackable design encourages gross motor skills, balance, and coordination while fostering creativity and problem-solving.

Children can use Stapelstein for imaginative play, building, stepping, and sitting, making it a versatile addition to any classroom or play area. Due to its eco-friendly, durable materials, it’s safe for both indoor and outdoor use. Its inclusive design supports children of all abilities, encouraging movement, collaboration, and sensory exploration.

Stapelstein transforms learning environments into dynamic, engaging spaces that support holistic child development.

3 simple ways you can use Stapelstein in your setting

Colour matching

With currently seventeen different colour options using the Stapelstein stepping stones, it’s easy to use this resource to colour match with objects. Pick a Stapelstein stone, hold it upside down and see how many ‘red’ things you can find?

Stepping stones

Due to the Stapelstein stones being lightweight but robust, they make great stepping stones (to be used both inside and outside). Place the stones around the classroom and step between them. Can you move from the yellow stone to the purple one? What happens if you place 2 on top of each other, does it make it harder?

Colour sorting

Turn over the Stapelstein stones and sort the objects into the correct coloured bowl.

Extra ideas for inspiration

Here’s some extra ideas for using Stapelstein stepping stones, for extra inspiration!

Water play

Stapelstein can be used in water play as floating stepping stones, allowing children to balance, jump, and explore movement while enhancing their coordination. They can also be used as water scoops or for pouring activities, encouraging sensory exploration and imaginative play.

Stacking

Stapelstein can be stacked in various formations to create towers, bridges, or obstacle courses, helping children develop spatial awareness and fine motor skills. By experimenting with different stacking patterns, kids can explore balance, stability, and problem-solving in a playful and creative way.

Hide and seek

Stapelstein can be used in hide and seek by stacking them to create hiding spots for small toys or using them as obstacles to crawl behind. Children can also incorporate them as markers for hiding locations, adding an extra layer of fun and movement to the game.

Sitting

Stapelstein can be used as a lightweight and flexible seating option, allowing children to sit comfortably during play, storytime, or group activities. By stacking multiple pieces, kids can adjust the height to suit their needs, promoting good posture and active sitting.

Balancing

Stapelstein can be used for balance activities by standing or stepping on them to improve coordination and core strength. Children can also try balancing on one foot or walking across a series of stacked stones to enhance their stability and body awareness.

The possibilities with Stapelstein are endless!
